SEAmester Cruises

SEAmester, South Africa’s first “class afloat”, takes place annually aboard the R/V SA Agulhas II and offers students from across the country an opportunity to better understand ocean processes and the technical aspects of ocean science. SEAmester also strengthens the skills needed to work with various oceanographic instruments and provides on-deck training. The UCT-MBL’s contribution to SEAmester includes training students to collect and analyze biogeochemical samples (e.g., nutrient, oxygen, and chlorophyll concentrations, plankton collections) and conduct process experiments (e.g., to measure rates of primary production and nutrient cycling). OceanWomxn

Ocean Womxn is a prestigious research and leadership programme at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Department of Oceanography.

Ocean Womxn Fellowships provide black womxn students with financial support, research opportunities and career development while they pursue postgraduate degrees at UCT.

BIOGRIP

The Biogeochemistry Research Infrastructure Platform (BIOGRIP), funded by the Department of Science and Innovation, is a South African research initiative designed to drive biogeochemical knowledge creation through investment in (1) technical capacity, training, and scientific leadership in biogeochemical research, (2) world-class analytical facilities, and (3) improved monitoring of biogeochemical environmental variables. BIOGRIP consists of a network of new and existing research laboratories housed in one of four nodes, each specializing in an aspect of biogeochemical research. The UCT-MBL is affiliated with the Isotope Biogeochemistry Node (hosted at UCT) and the Atmospheric Biogeochemistry Node (primarily hosted at The North-West University and the South African Weather Service).
